11+ punctuation questions

Punctuation questions test the vocabulary and precision an 11+ English paper is really examining. Here is what is being asked, how to reason it out rather than guess, and five worked examples with full explanations, rising in difficulty.

Example 1 · level 1a gentle start

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

  • My dogs lead is red.
  • After the film we walked home,
  • we saw a fox, a badger and an owl
  • “Run!” shouted Ben.

Answer: “Run!” shouted Ben. The speech mark closes after the punctuation, and the reporting clause is lower case.

Example 2 · level 2typical of early practice

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

  • My brother, who lives in Leeds is a nurse.
  • Tom, Anna and Raj went home.
  • After, the film we walked home.
  • Stop?

Answer: Tom, Anna and Raj went home. Names in a list take commas; the last two are joined by and.

Example 3 · level 3standard paper difficulty

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

  • We visited Paris, France: Rome, Italy: and Madrid, Spain.
  • She had one aim; to win.
  • She had one aim, to win.
  • The team's captain thanked the players' families.

Answer: The team's captain thanked the players' families. One team, many players — the apostrophes fall either side of the s accordingly.

Example 4 · level 4a harder paper

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

  • It was Jones' turn to speak'.
  • I have one job - to finish this,
  • Having finished, she closed the book.
  • Whos book is this?

Answer: Having finished, she closed the book. An opening participle phrase is followed by a comma.

Example 5 · level 5the level that separates candidates

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

  • Three things matter Effort, honesty and time.
  • She asked whether we were ready.
  • It was Jones' turn to speak'.
  • The 1990's were quieter than the 2000's.

Answer: She asked whether we were ready. A reported question is a statement, so it takes a full stop.
