Where marks get lost: For money, work out the cost first, then take it from what was paid.

Worked examples

Every question below is generated by the same engine your child practises on, and every answer is derived by our checker rather than written by hand — which is why we can put them on a public page at all.

Example 1 · level 1a gentle start

A film starts at 06:00 and lasts 29 minutes. What time does it end?

  • 05:29
  • 06:29
  • 06:00
  • 07:29

Answer: 06:29 29 minutes is 0h 29m, so 06:00 + 29m = 06:29.

Example 2 · level 2typical of early practice

A film starts at 10:10 and lasts 57 minutes. What time does it end?

  • 11:50
  • 10:07
  • 12:07
  • 11:07

Answer: 11:07 57 minutes is 0h 57m, so 10:10 + 57m = 11:07.

Example 3 · level 3standard paper difficulty

3 pens cost £1.29 each. How much change is there from £5.00?

  • £3.71
  • £1.13
  • £3.87
  • £2.42

Answer: £1.13 3 × £1.29 = £3.87. £5.00 − £3.87 = £1.13.

Example 4 · level 4a harder paper

A film starts at 10:25 and lasts 167 minutes. What time does it end?

  • 12:12
  • 14:12
  • 13:12
  • 15:25

Answer: 13:12 167 minutes is 2h 47m, so 10:25 + 167m = 13:12.

Example 5 · level 5the level that separates candidates

4 pens cost £10.28 each. How much change is there from £45.00?

  • £14.16
  • £3.88
  • £34.72
  • £41.12

Answer: £3.88 4 × £10.28 = £41.12. £45.00 − £41.12 = £3.88.
